Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an essential part of Chinese medicine. It’s a treatment that involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into the skin. Dr. Scarlett Paau at Optimal Health places these needles at selected points along the energy pathways in your body called channels, aka meridians. These channels connect over two thousand acupuncture points throughout our body.

The flow of energy through the channels is called Qi (pronounced: Chi). This constant flow is crucial for one’s health and wellness, and any obstructions or insufficient Qi lead to pain, illnesses, or diseases. Acupuncture is designed to regulate Qi pathways and adjust the amount of Qi to restore its healthy flow, and it is proven to be effective in the treatment of a very wide variety of conditions.

What are the possible benefits of acupuncture?

Acupuncture improves many health conditions, diseases, and isolated symptoms. Western medicine speculates that the treatment stimulates your central nervous system, causing the release of certain chemicals in your brain, spinal cord, and muscles.

Alone or alongside conventional medicine, acupuncture can treat:

  • Appendicitis
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Autoimmune disorders

What should I expect when I have acupuncture?

Once you visit Optimal Health for acupuncture services one or more times, you will grow familiar with the procedure with the treatment sessions. If you are nervous about being needled, no worries! Dr. Scarlett Paau uses a non-invasive needling technique that only requires gentle touching on the skin without puncturing through the skin. It is calming and completely painless. It is suitable for any sensitive folks, including young children and newborns.

Prior to your first visit, you will be asked to fill out an Initial Visit Questionnaire.

At the time of your appointment, the practitioner ushers you into a private treatment room with comfortable lighting. There may also be soothing sounds in the background. After the intake, you will be asked to lie on a treatment table as Dr. Paau places needles at specific acupuncture points. There may also be the application of an infrared heat lamp, direct moxibustion, gentle bodywork, cupping, Gua Sha, and other holistic therapies.

Dr. Paau dedicates the whole session time in the treatment room with you unless you request to be left alone for 15-20 minutes to rest.
