Terry Ycasas, DC, is the CEO and founder of Optimal Health in the Buckman neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. As a chiropractor with a variety of specialties, they help a multitude of patients, including those with acute and chronic conditions, patients who have suffered trauma from motor vehicle collisions, and patients who have transitioned into regular wellness care (i.e., patients who no longer experience symptoms, but are receiving care to continue to improve their movement and function, and to minimize nerve disturbances for optimal health).
Dr. Terry invites patients in for initial evaluations, during which they learn about the patient’s needs and expectations while evaluating their conditions and ailments. They then develop an individualized chiropractic care plan incorporating the best modality and best course of care for each individual.
Utilizing their full repertoire of chiropractic techniques, Dr. Terry incorporates Torque Release, Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization tools, electrical stimulation, high-volt/ultrasound therapy, and craniosacral therapy into their practice. They also provide physical therapy that combines yoga and core strengthening to help reduce pain and help patients live life with fewer injuries.
In their free time, Dr. Terry enjoys power yoga flows, hiking, photography, and science fiction. Terry also enjoys food and frequents locally-owned restaurants to savor some of the best signature meals that Portland has to offer.
Dr. Terry incorporates the following techniques and therapies to aid with the chiropractic adjustment:
Torque Release Technique (TRT)
TRT is an adjusting technique that addresses neurological imbalances. The technique involves using an instrument to make specific adjustments to correct subluxations (misalignments of the spine) and improve nerve frequency.
Arthrostim Instrument
The ArthroStim Instrument is a machine that delivers 12 - 14 incremental thrusts per second making it stronger and faster than a typical single thrust adjustment. The tool is ideal for patients who prefer a gentler approach to traditional chiropractic adjustments.
Interferential Current Therapy (IFC)
IFC is a form of electrical muscle stimulation used to treat acute and chronic pain from trauma, injury, or surgery. It relieves pain, increases blood flow, and reduces inflammation and swelling. IFC is different from a TENS unit in that TENS delivers low-frequency current across the surface of the skin whereas IFC delivers a higher frequency current that penetrates deeper into the tissue.
High-Voltage Ultrasound (HV/US)
HV/US combines high-voltage electrical stimulation with ultrasound therapy to promote faster and more efficient treatment for pain relief. It decreases musculoskeletal pain and muscle spasms, increases local circulation, increases/maintains joint range of motion, and is an effective treatment modality in treating trigger points.
Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
IASTM is based on the principles of cross-friction massage. Dr. Terry uses stainless steel tools that have been designed to specifically detect and effectively treat injured areas with soft tissue build up or chronic inflammation. IASTM is used to perform muscle mobilization by breaking down fascial restriction, scar tissue, and adhesions in the muscle fascia. The benefits of IASTM includes faster pain relief, improved mobility, and quicker recovery.
High Frequency Oscillation Tool
The high frequency oscillation tool combines high frequency with magnetic therapy to create a powerful myofascial release therapy instrument. It is an effective tool to release tension, balance tissue and muscle mechanics, and improve range of motion due to trauma, posture, or inflammation.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy uses focused light to stimulate cells and trigger cellular metabolism. In effect, it accelerates the body's natural healing processes and aids in a myriad of problems, including decreasing pain, inflammation, and edema. Additionally, it stimulates muscle and connective tissue repair.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
CST is a gentle hands-on technique used to relieve tension in the central nervous system to promote a sense of well-being by boosting health and immunity. CST uses less than 5 grams of pressure to release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the central nervous system as well as other systems, such as digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and musculoskeletal.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Trigger Point Release
Dr. Terry uses trigger point therapy to help soften and release the muscles surrounding the TMJ to reduce pain.
